C.I.G. MOBILE APP FEATURES
Every area of the C.I.G. Mobile Application has its own story. In answering the question as to why a mobile application containing each resource and/or resource type, the answer is a no-brainer for me. It is because I thought it would be beneficial to have all of these resources in one place, so that when someone seeking assistance in certain areas needs help now, they only have to go to one place to find the help they need.
Resources
The ‘Resources’ tab provides resources in categories such as Food Services (charitable), Veterans Services, Homeless Shelter Services, Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Community Mental Health Centers, local Training/Seminars, Mental Health Diagnosis Information, Crisis De-escalation Tips, Hotline Numbers, Emergency Financial Assistance Services, and local Crisis Intervention Team members.
Something to highlight is that the resource information follows the traveling user or family as they travel from one city to another. The app updates the user’s location and updates the resources to where they currently are. For example, if the user lives in Houston Texas, they will initially set their resources to Houston Texas. However, if the user does not disable the geolocator, the C.I.G. Mobile app will automatically switch to Denver Colorado when the user enters Denver Colorado or any other city. This allows for the user to always have the closest resources available when they open the app. This comes in handy especially in a crisis where the emergency is happening now.
Self-Care
The ‘Self-Care’ tab provides users with several tools that will help with managing anxiety; breathing techniques to calm the mind; tips that help us become more mindful about our eating habits; knowledge on how to handle trauma; it provides tools that can help us become more aware of suicidal predictors, commonalities, and characteristics; and helps us ground ourselves to become better physically and emotionally.
Community Fears
The ‘Community Fears’ tab provides information that provides the user with a better sense of Crime Awareness, meaning to have a conscious awareness of the existence of crime around you. Among the topics discussed that include definitions and ways to protect yourself from being a victim of a crime, are Burglary, Robbery, Domestic Violence, Auto Theft, and Sex Offenders. The user is also provided with information pertaining to self-defense, and best practices when contacting police officers.
It Takes A Village
The ‘It Takes A Village’ tab addresses the fear of having a loved one go missing and not having a clue about what to do about it, except wait on the police to arrive and tell us what to do. This area of the application allows the users to create their own network of friends and family that will stop everything they are doing to help search for a loved one that goes missing. The user will create a list of contacts who will be immediately notified of the lost person when the “gone missing alert” is activated. Everyone will be provided identifiers of the person who is missing; the last location they were seen or expected to have left from; and a map that shows a perimeter that encompasses the area that the missing person should be in based on an algorithm that moves faster that the missing person could move, whether walking or running. This allows the people searching to fan out and move inward from outside of the radius shown on the map, until the person is located. First-responders can also be included to allow them to join the search as well, or eliminate locations already searched to resolve the issue faster.
Human Trafficking
The ‘Human Trafficking’ tab provides information to users on where they can report instances where they have seen, or suspect human trafficking is occurring. The user is provided with the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the organizations that handle these reports and subsequent investigations into the reported crime.
